About Aquarium HeatersAbout Aquarium Heaters
Modern aquarium heaters are almost always combined heaterstats; in other words they contain both a heater and a thermostat.

The thermostat senses the temperature of the aquarium water and turns the heater on when the temperature falls too low and off when it is warm enough. The most common thermostats are bi-metallic strips but electronic versions are increasingly popular. Electronic systems often have extra features like the ability to shut the heater down if it is removed from the water and to flash an alarm light if the heater fails or the temperature wanders too far from the set point.

The thermostat is usually located at the top of the heater and for this reason it is normal to mount the heater at an angle. If the heater is mounted vertically there is a danger that hot water rising up from the element will fool the thermostat into oversetimating the temperature of the aquarium. When mounted at an angle the plume of warm water from the element will rise up and miss the thermostat.

External heater/thermostats are also available; these are mounted inline with pumps and external canister filters and require no equipment in the aquarium. This can be a huge advantage in terms of neatness and for preventing damage to the heater.

Very neat: No parts within the aquarium, the external heater remains hidden in the aquarium cabinet or behind the tank.

Very safe: The heater is external so your fish have no access to it this removes the risk of heater burns or of large fish damaging the heater. No danger of damage if the equipment is left running without water for a short period of time.

Patented heating element made with the exclusive PTC system. The traditional metal resistor coils have been replaced by a special polymer sheet, silk-screened with heating ink.

Setting of temperature controlled by an electronic circuit with indicator light and clearly marked temperature scale.

Mounts inline with your external canister filter. Connectors suitable for flexible pipe from most external filters. 200 watt size suits 12/16mm hose whilst 300 watt size suits 14 & 16/22mm hoses.
